Purpose
A
Town Treasure Restored
"We
shape our buildings, and our buildings shape us."
Winston Churchill
If you believe
the quote above, The Gray Building has already shaped us. The
town of Northfield has 125 years of pride and tradition invested
in the Gray Building. It has served as a focal point for generations
of Northfield children.
Prominently
located on a 2+/- acre knoll on Route 12, the Gray Building is
a visual gateway to the Northfield community -- adjacent to the
village business district, town common and within walking distance
of the current Northfield schools. It is eligible for preservation
under the National Historic Register administered by the Department
of Interior.
The mission
of the Gray Building Coalition is to restore this town treasure
while providing rental spaces for local non-profits and small
businesses as well as meeting space for local community groups.
The Coalition
has successfully raised the money to restore the building infrastructure
and renovate the first floor. Four tenants now occupy the first
floor classrooms; The Northfield Boys & Girls Club, Headstart,
Northfield Schools alternative middle school "White Pines"
and A Step Above Dance Studio.
The Coalition
continues to fundraise to support the renovation of the second
floor in the summer of 2005 for occupancy in September 2005.
