What is
going on at the Gray Building?
By Anne Gould
By now most
of you have seen the earth moving equipment at the Gray Building.
We have kicked off the construction at the site by removing the
old pavement, improving the water connection and re-grading the
front slope.
For months
now, the Coalition has worked closely with the architects at Black
River Design to create renovation plans that retain the historical
integrity of the building and work within our budget. This winter,
a crew from the Department of Corrections did some preliminary
demolition, which included removing old carpets, floor tiles,
dropped ceilings, broken fixtures, radiators and damaged insulation.
EF Wall was
hired as the Construction Manager and is overseeing the renovations.
Four tenants will move into the first floor this September.
Meanwhile,
the Coalition is working hard on our $1.3 million fundraising
effort. In January, Governor Douglas visited Northfield to present
the Coalition with a $250,000 grant from the Vermont Community
Development Program. In November we received a $250,000 federal
grant through the Save America's Treasurers program thanks to
the support of Senator Patrick Leahy. We have also received many
generous private gifts and grants from people and organizations
in our community.
On May 15,
Senator Leahy will be joining us at noon for an open house "hard
hat" tour and an ice cream social. Mark your calendars and
plan to join us for the festivities. Watch the Northfield News
or visit our website www.graybuilding.org for more details.
