Gray
Building Update

The Gray Building
Coalition has lots of exciting news to report. First, remember
to save Sunday afternoon, September 26th for an Open House to
celebrate the completion of the first floor and Phase One of the
campaign. We will have tours, refreshments and group photos on
the front steps.
Norwich University
has made an extraordinary gift of $50,000 to the campaign. Many
local families have invested in the project by making donations
in honor of their family. Businesses have also been generous to
the campaign. Altogether we have raised over $913,000! The campaign
committee is hard at work on the last $387,000 needed to complete
the $1.3 million renovation costs.
The restoration
of the building is really moving along. Construction is right
on schedule and the four first-floor tenants expect to move in
on September 1st. The double staircase is back! There is a new
oak staircase as you walk in the front door and the back staircase
has been restored. The double staircase is one of the architectural
features that make the historic Gray Building so unique. The site
work is nearly complete and you can now walk from the parking
lot into the Gray Building and not walk up a single stair.
The cupola
has been re-shingled and repainted and it previews how beautiful
the building will look when all the exterior painting is complete.
All 44-classroom windows are back in place and the classrooms
are being painted a beautiful cream color. The blackboards in
the community room (the 4th grade classroom) have been restored.
And, the Northfield School Board has decided that the old school
bell should be returned to its original home at the Gray
Building.
We are giving
tours even while the building is under construction. On May 15th
more than 200 guests attended an Open House and hard hat
tour and on June 25th a group of former teachers and friends toured
the building. Tours like these are an excellent way to get a feeling
for the entire restoration project, so if you would like a tour,
please give me, or one of our board members a call. You can also
review our progress by visiting the photo album on our website
at www.graybuilding.org.
