Welcome
to the Gray Building --
a prominent historic site in the heart of Vermont.
"This
is an opportunity to save a piece of our history that has served
so well as an educational institution, while also serving Northfield's
future. This project continues the tradition in Northfield of
meeting the needs of children and supporting volunteer efforts
throughout the community."
Senator Patrick Leahy
Senior Member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and of its
Subcommittee on Interior and Related Agencies
On
July 29, 2003, the Gray Building Coalition, a local non-profit
organization, purchased the 1877 schoolhouse, locally known as
The Gray Building. The Coalition was created to redevelop the
school as a community center where youth and adults can have a
safe, stimulating environment, to interact with each other and
expand their horizons.
Northfield
has created history and tradition at The Gray Building for 128
years. The handsome building remains a community treasure and
is arguably the most prominent building in town. The Gray Building
Coalition, a non-profit volunteer organization, has led a successful
restoration effort of the old schoolhouse; raising over $1million
towards the $1.4 million goal. The restoration will: update the
heating, plumbing, electrical and fire protection; add a kitchen
and an elevator; refinish, repair and repaint the entire building;
restore the double staircase and the rising wall.
